DESCRIPTION: This is a drawing that I made a couple months back. It obviously represents how people can be manipulated by fear based on religious dogma, with the puppet being controlled by marionette handles for intense religious practice. Out of all my drawings thus far, this one is certainly one of my most personal pieces. Being a Christian myself, I remember being in theology classes where they basically taught that if you did not have the same, specific mindset, that is the equivalent of committing mortal sin. This included strict guidelines of going to Sunday Mass, homophobia, fasting, and others.
The former topic psyched me out for a few days, because I felt that if I did not attend Mass every single Sunday, then something was seriously wrong with me. After my parents (who are also Christian) talked me back into my senses, I managed to put those anxieties to rest. Looking back at these theology lectures, I realized how corrupt Christians use fear to manipulate their subjects into following their own footsteps and have power over them. I have met so many faithful people who are very kind and benevolent, but it is a travesty to see that a belief that is meant to promote love, caring, and generosity towards others is often twisted to control people.
